The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it has received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties in Nigeria. This development was made public by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a consultative meeting with media executives held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to Professor Yakubu, INEC is currently processing these applications in accordance with the guidelines set by the Electoral Act and the Commission’s own regulations. He added that out of the 110 applications received as of June 23, 2025, all but six have been acknowledged, and those pending will be addressed before the end of the week.
To guide the registration process, Yakubu reminded prospective political actors that the 2022 handbook containing INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties is available on the commission’s official website. He emphasized that the commission remains committed to transparency and compliance with due process.
In a move to further ensure public awareness, INEC has released the full list of the 110 associations vying for political party status. The list includes each group’s proposed name, acronym, official address, and the names of their interim Chairmen and Secretaries. The information has been made available both digitally and in hard copy for media stakeholders.
This surge in applications signals a growing political engagement among Nigerians and sets the stage for a potentially crowded political landscape ahead of future elections. INEC’s swift handling and transparent communication around the process are expected to enhance public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
