President John Dramani Mahama has affirmed that Ghana will conclude its $3 billion Extended Credit Facility programme with the International Monetary Fund by April 2026, as originally scheduled. Speaking during a post-Kwahu Business Forum session with business leaders, Mahama emphasized the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and careful implementation of the IMF-supported reforms. He made it clear that no extension would be necessary if the country adheres strictly to the current roadmap.

Mahama reassured stakeholders that fiscal responsibility would persist beyond the duration of the IMF programme. He stressed that disciplined economic management would become the new norm, helping to avoid any future financial instability. According to him, the long-term goal is to build a resilient economy that remains on stable footing even after Ghana exits the IMF programme.

The President placed particular emphasis on the role of the private sector in Ghana’s economic recovery. He asserted that a thriving private sector was essential for job creation and long-term national growth. “If the private sector thrives, the economy thrives,” Mahama declared, underlining the government’s plan to create a more enabling environment for business development.

He also pointed out the limitations of public sector employment in tackling youth unemployment. With only around 800,000 public sector jobs in a nation of 33 million, Mahama said the burden of employing the growing number of graduates must fall on the private sector. Doubling public employment would still not be enough, he warned, positioning private enterprise as the engine for sustainable employment and national prosperity.
