Senator Chuck Schumer has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump for the economic fallout caused by his tariff policies, claiming that they have plunged the U.S. into chaos. According to Schumer, the tariffs have imposed the largest tax hike on American families in over five decades, significantly raising the financial burden on citizens. The senator also pointed to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for allegedly undermining critical programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, exacerbating the economic strain on American families.

Schumer took to social media, stating that Trump’s tariff strategy is responsible for the worst three-day market performance since the COVID-19 pandemic. He accused Congressional Republicans of supporting the policies for the benefit of the wealthiest Americans, particularly to facilitate tax cuts for billionaires. The senator’s remarks reflect growing frustration among Democrats about the impact of Trump’s trade policies on ordinary Americans.

Additionally, Schumer warned that the economic repercussions of Trump’s tariffs are poised to have a severe impact on New York City, one of the largest trade hubs globally. He argued that the tariffs could trigger a recession in the city, with job losses, reduced investments, and declining revenues as direct consequences. Schumer estimated that New Yorkers could face up to $20 billion in increased costs, with approximately 260,000 jobs at risk due to the tariffs.

In his statement, Schumer emphasized the urgent need for action to reverse the damage caused by these policies, as they continue to threaten the financial stability of both American families and the broader economy. He called on Republicans to reconsider their stance on tariffs and take steps to protect the country from further economic decline.
