OpenAI Implements Temporary Limits on ChatGPT’s Image Generation Feature Due to High Demand

CEO Sam Altman took to social media to share that the surge in usage has resulted in excessive load on the company’s servers, prompting the decision to temporarily restrict the feature. He mentioned that OpenAI is working on optimizing its resources, with plans to introduce rate limits to manage demand efficiently.

This feature, integrated directly into ChatGPT using GPT-4o, eliminates the need for separate DALL·E platforms. It was rolled out across all subscription tiers, including free users, in late February. Altman described it as an exciting development for AI-driven communication, with the potential to create both impressive and controversial content. GPT-4o offers new capabilities like text rendering, multi-turn generation, and improved creative flexibility for professional and educational uses.

Since its launch, the feature has gone viral, with many users showcasing AI-generated art, including anime-style images, on social media platforms. Altman himself updated his profile picture using the image generation tool, highlighting its popularity. To alleviate pressure on its infrastructure, OpenAI will soon limit free-tier users to three image generations per day.
