OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, is set to lead the company’s global expansion efforts and corporate partnerships, as announced by CEO Sam Altman. This strategic move comes as OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, aims to strengthen its position in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Altman will now focus more on the technical side of operations, enhancing research and product development while Lightcap takes charge of business strategy and partnerships.

In his new role, Lightcap will oversee critical global deployments, partnerships, and infrastructure development. He will spearhead the $500-billion Stargate project in collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle, which focuses on creating a network of data centers to support AI workloads. Altman emphasized that Lightcap’s leadership will help maximize the impact of OpenAI’s research initiatives and accelerate its global presence.

Lightcap, who has a background in venture capital and worked with Altman at Y Combinator, joined OpenAI in 2018. His experience is seen as crucial for navigating the evolving AI landscape. Alongside this leadership shift, OpenAI has also expanded the role of its Chief Research Officer, Mark Chen, who will now work to integrate research with product development.

Amid ongoing efforts to secure investments, OpenAI is in the process of raising $40 billion and transitioning into a for-profit entity to fund the next generation of AI models. This comes after a successful $6.6 billion funding round in October 2024. The company is also working to simplify its products to attract broader investment amid growing scrutiny over its AI spending.
