RackCentre is making a significant contribution to Nigeria’s digital economy with the launch of its new 12 Megawatt Artificial Intelligence (AI)-oriented data centre. Located in Lagos, the new facility aims to drive local cloud adoption, enhance data sovereignty, and attract global technology players seeking scalable infrastructure in West Africa’s largest market. As demand for AI, high-performance computing, and low-latency digital services rises, the investment signals growing confidence in Nigeria’s digital future despite challenges with power and infrastructure.

The new data centre, called Lagos 2 (LGS 2), expands RackCentre’s existing capabilities. RackCentre previously had 1.5 megawatts installed at its first facility but now doubles the country’s data centre capacity with 12 megawatts. According to CEO Lars Johanisson, the expansion positions RackCentre as a hyperscale AI-ready data centre in Nigeria. The new infrastructure is critical to meet the country’s increasing demand for cloud services, with broadband penetration rising to 48% and accelerating AI adoption.

Designed for speed and resilience, RackCentre’s AI-oriented facility boasts 12 MW of IT power capacity, a utility power supply of 25 MVA, and a 3,240 square meter space. It houses six data halls, providing extensive room for scalable infrastructure. Sustainability is a key focus, as the facility has earned the IFC EDGE certification, making it the first green-certified data centre across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This environmental commitment aligns with the growing demand for energy-efficient digital solutions.

RackCentre’s investment in the new facility not only supports digital transformation in Nigeria but also positions the country as a major digital hub alongside South Africa. The centre enhances local data sovereignty, reduces reliance on foreign cloud services, and helps businesses cut operational costs. With continued improvements in connectivity and local policies supporting cloud adoption, RackCentre’s expansion is poised to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s long-term digital development.
