Sanwo-Olu Advocates for Stronger Market Connectivity to Promote Sustainable Economic Growth

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing market connectivity between producers and consumers, aiming to foster stronger relationships and economic growth. Speaking at the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) conference on World Consumer Rights Day, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and collaboration in addressing market challenges. His administration is focused on creating partnerships that encourage sustainability, innovation, and the protection of consumer rights, with the goal of building a more sustainable future for Lagosians.

The 2025 World Consumer Rights Day, themed “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles,” highlighted the global need for consumers’ rights to be upheld. Sanwo-Olu stressed that consumer protection remains a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda under the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus framework. He also encouraged stakeholders to collaborate on sustainability projects, exploring international best practices to enhance consumer protection and sustainability efforts across Lagos State.

In her address, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose Medebem, Commissioner for the Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, underlined that consumers are central to shaping markets, influencing businesses, and driving innovation. However, she pointed out the barriers consumers face, including limited access to sustainable products and rising costs of living. Ambrose Medebem called for inclusive, affordable, and sustainable solutions to ensure that vulnerable and low-income consumers are not left behind in the transition to a more sustainable future.

LASCOPA General Manager Afolabi Solebo reiterated the importance of collaboration among consumers and stakeholders to shape a just, accessible, and sustainable marketplace. He praised the agency’s efforts under Sanwo-Olu’s leadership to empower consumers, promote fairness, and ensure responsible consumption that benefits both people and the planet. Panel discussions at the event focused on consumer rights, sustainable practices, and policy frameworks supporting a just transition to sustainability, drawing insights from industry experts and legal professionals.
