The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the construction of the Sustainable & Emerging Technologies Institute (SETI) in Kano, under the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). The institute is being developed to enhance the socio-economic prospects of future generations by fostering innovation and technology. A statement confirming the commencement of the project was issued by NASENI’s Director of Information, Olusegun Ayeoyenikan.
During the groundbreaking ceremony held at Bayero University Kano (BUK), NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Halilu, emphasized the significance of the institute’s location on a 30-hectare land at the university’s new campus. The institute will feature modern facilities, including hubs for artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies, alongside reliable power sources. Halilu pointed out that SETI aims to provide a platform for young Nigerians to drive innovation and transform Nigeria’s industrial and technological landscape.
The institute’s establishment aligns with NASENI’s core principles: Collaboration, Creation, and Commercialisation (the 3Cs). Halilu expressed confidence that SETI would produce innovators, technologists, and entrepreneurs capable of making global impacts. He also highlighted the project’s importance in realizing Nigeria’s broader industrialization goals as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
Uche Nnaji, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, lauded the initiative, noting that it would help place Nigeria on the global innovation map. The Vice Chancellor of BUK, Professor Sagir Abbas, also praised the project, calling it a vital tool for combining government, academia, and industry efforts in fostering economic development and job creation. Abbas highlighted the potential of SETI to transform Nigeria’s approach to sustainable development.
The establishment of SETI is expected to provide significant opportunities for Nigerian youth, positioning them as key drivers of global technological advancements. The project is seen as an essential step toward preparing young Nigerians for the rapidly evolving world economy driven by technology and innovation.
