The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong warning to telecommunications companies, demanding an immediate reversal of a 50% tariff hike that took effect on February 13, 2025. If the tariff is not reverted by the end of February, the NLC has vowed to initiate a nationwide shutdown of telecom operations starting March 1, 2025. The NLC’s decision follows a meeting held by its Central Working Committee in Lokoja, Kogi State.

In the communique, signed by NLC president Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, the congress outlined a series of actions to resist the tariff hike. Starting from February 13, workers and citizens have been urged to boycott the services of MTN, AIRTEL, and GLO daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. This boycott is intended to protest the price increase, which the NLC has labeled as an arbitrary exploitation of Nigerian citizens.

The NLC further called on Nigerians to suspend the purchase of data from these telecom companies, which it claims are using such charges to exploit the public. Additionally, the labor movement demanded the repatriation of funds allegedly siphoned out of the country by these companies. The NLC is also mobilizing its affiliates across the country to participate in this protest and raise awareness on the issue.

The NLC’s threat of a nationwide shutdown highlights the intensity of the dispute, and it has called on its State Councils to start sensitizing members and the public. Civil society groups and other stakeholders are encouraged to join the movement, making the protest as impactful as possible. The labor body has also warned that the shutdown will commence without hesitation if the tariff hike is not rolled back by the end of February.

On a separate issue, the NLC expressed concerns over ongoing tax reform discussions. While acknowledging the need for fiscal reforms, it emphasized that any new tax policies must not worsen the already difficult economic conditions for Nigerian workers. The NLC has pledged to engage with authorities to ensure that any tax reforms introduced are fair, equitable, and do not burden the workforce.
