Telecom regulators from West Africa and the Caribbean have commended Nigeria’s spectrum management strategies as a model for regional growth and innovation. This recognition came during a high-level meeting in Abuja between the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA) and the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), where discussions focused on harmonizing spectrum allocation and enhancing telecom policies across both regions.

Nigeria’s pioneering initiatives in spectrum trading and direct-to-device technology were highlighted as key drivers of economic growth and technological advancement. WATRA’s Executive Secretary, Aliyu Aboki, emphasized that these efforts could serve as a blueprint for other nations, while CTU’s Secretary-General, Rodney Taylor, stressed the importance of continued collaboration to maximize the benefits of spectrum management.

The meeting also explored solutions to broader challenges such as roaming regulations, broadband expansion, and satellite services. Both organizations expressed interest in formalizing their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding, with WATRA agreeing to share Nigeria’s spectrum roadmap and national frequency allocation table with CTU. This cooperation is expected to strengthen telecom frameworks across West Africa and the Caribbean.
