Telecommunications operators in Nigeria are awaiting guidelines from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to implement a controversial 50% tariff hike. The NCC is set to release a “determination document,” which will outline the framework, terms, and conditions for applying the tariff adjustments. The new policy will allow operators to adjust prices within established tariff bands and is expected to take effect in February 2025.

The President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria emphasized that the tariff adjustments are regulated under the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003, ensuring compliance and fairness. The new tariffs are seen as a response to rising operational costs, including inflation and exchange rate volatility, which have strained the telecommunications sector’s financial stability. Despite this, the tariff hike fails to address deeper industry challenges that impact Nigeria’s digital economy.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers has issued an ultimatum, demanding that the 50% tariff hike be reduced to 10%. Subscribers have threatened legal action if the NCC does not reverse the hike by January 29, 2025. The Nigerian Labour Congress’ planned protest has also drawn criticism from the subscribers’ association, urging them to focus on labor matters instead of interfering in telecommunications issues.
