The Federal Government of Nigeria aims to pass the Digital Economy Bill by the second quarter of 2025 as part of its strategy to enhance digital infrastructure and drive economic growth. Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, confirmed the timeline in a recent interview, emphasizing the bill’s role in advancing Nigeria’s digital ambitions. The legislation, currently under review, seeks to provide a legal framework for technology innovation, e-governance, and digital services in the country.

A key provision of the bill focuses on infrastructure development, talent cultivation, and regulatory transparency, all critical to Nigeria’s goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2030. The government also aims to improve e-governance and increase citizen engagement by gathering feedback from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Tijani highlighted that this is the first bill in Nigeria’s history to undergo extensive public consultation across the country, with the review process expected to conclude by February before moving to the National Assembly.

The bill has received backing from key members of the National Assembly, including Senator Shuaib Salisu and House Representative Adedeji Olajide, who chair ICT and Cybersecurity committees. Their collaboration with the Ministry ensures the bill aligns with national priorities and fosters an inclusive approach to Nigeria’s digital transformation. If passed, the legislation will serve as a cornerstone for Nigeria’s growing digital sector, reinforcing the country’s long-term economic vision.
