The Federal Government has announced plans to increase telecommunication tariffs, though not as high as the 100 percent requested by operators. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, revealed this after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, noting that consultations and studies were ongoing. He emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that telecom companies remain viable for continued investment. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced the approved tariff changes soon.

Dr. Tijani highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure investments, moving away from reliance solely on private companies. He stressed that meaningful connectivity and quality service require significant resources, which necessitate the proposed tariff adjustments. Meanwhile, NCC Executive Vice-Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida assured Nigerians that the 100 per cent tariff hike proposed by operators is unlikely, with a final decision expected within two weeks. The NCC also plans to enforce simplified pricing templates and updated quality-of-service regulations for greater transparency.

Consumer advocacy groups, including the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS), have criticized the proposed hikes, citing economic hardships. NATCOMS President Adeolu Ogunbanjo labeled the increase “insensitive” and threatened legal action if alternatives aren’t explored. A stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja brings together telecom operators, regulators, and consumer representatives to deliberate on the tariff changes and their implications. Advocacy leaders like Sola Ajulo stressed the importance of measuring increases that consider consumers’ welfare amidst Nigeria’s economic challenges.
