The Murtala Muhammed Airport Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) reported a remarkable 94% increase in revenue generation for 2024, totaling N144.2 billion between January and October, compared to N74.28 billion during the same period in 2023. Comptroller Michael Awe attributed the success to enhanced trade facilitation, improved compliance among stakeholders, strategic deployment of resources, effective law enforcement, and efficient risk management strategies. This significant growth underscores the command’s commitment to fostering legitimate trade while bolstering national revenue.
In addition to its revenue achievements, the command intercepted contraband worth N3.32 billion between July and October 2024. Seized items included military-grade equipment, such as walkie-talkies, helmets, and drones, as well as prohibited wildlife and narcotics like pangolin scales, Canadian Cannabis Sativa, and Tramadol Hydrochloride. Compt. Awe highlighted the contraventions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and commended the interagency collaborations and enhanced intelligence strategies that contributed to these successes in curbing illicit trade.
Looking ahead, the Command aims to further strengthen its anti-smuggling efforts and trade facilitation measures by leveraging advanced technology, improving cargo inspection procedures, and fostering stakeholder engagement. Compt. Awe acknowledged the support of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the dedication of his officers, and the cooperation of stakeholders, including importers, exporters, and clearing agents. He emphasized the command’s ongoing commitment to efficiency, compliance, and sustainable trade practices.
