Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Nigerian finance minister, has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term. The WTO confirmed that Okonjo-Iweala was the only candidate for the role after the nomination period ended on November 8, 2024, without any additional submissions.
The reappointment follows Okonjo-Iweala’s confirmation on September 16, 2024, that she was willing to serve another four-year term. Her leadership at the WTO has been widely recognized for strengthening global trade relations and advocating for economic policies that support development.
This announcement comes as Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu congratulated Okonjo-Iweala on her achievement, marking the occasion as she celebrates her 70th birthday alongside the 92nd birthday of Nigerian traditional ruler, Ojora.
