The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has allocated N6.6 billion to cover claims and compensation for over 103,000 beneficiaries in a move to enhance employee welfare through its Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS). The Fund’s expanded outreach efforts have resulted in an enrollment boost, now covering over 172,000 employers and 7.6 million employees. During the “compliance day” at the Lagos International Trade Fair, Executive Director Mrs. Mojisolaoluwa Alli-Macaulay emphasized the importance of the scheme in providing medical and financial support to employees affected by workplace injuries.
The NSITF’s initiatives include assistance to one hundred and one individuals with artificial limbs and medical treatment abroad for 11 workers, showcasing its commitment to comprehensive support for Nigerian workers. Alli-Macaulay highlighted ECS benefits like disability coverage, medical and death benefits, rehabilitation, and employer compensation for lost productivity due to workplace incidents. She emphasized that compliance with the ECS is mandatory, offering legal protection for employers while fostering morale and productivity among workers.
NSITF’s Regional Manager for Lagos Mainland, Agbonma Okorafor, underscored the ECS’s role in aiding both employees and employers by providing critical financial support and promoting safer workplace practices. The partnership with business owners and the collaboration with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry mark the Fund’s ongoing mission to raise awareness and commitment to worker protection and welfare in Nigeria.
