At the 2024 Taiwan-Africa Business Forum in Taiwan, Gabriel Idahosa, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), advocated for new collaborations between Taiwan, Nigeria, and other African countries to drive economic growth. Represented by Dr. Ngozi Omambala, Idahosa emphasized the potential for partnerships to address infrastructure, energy, and technology gaps. The forum spotlighted Taiwan’s contributions to Africa’s development in the healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors.
Idahosa highlighted the growing trade between Taiwan and Africa, with volumes rising nearly 70% from $4.65 billion in 2018 to $7.81 billion recently. Nigeria, Taiwan’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa, hosted a successful Taiwan trade forum in Lagos in May 2024, where Taiwanese companies showcased advancements in electronics, machinery, and clean energy. This trade event underscored Nigeria’s appeal as a source of raw materials for Taiwan’s industrial growth.
Looking ahead, Idahosa encouraged Taiwanese businesses to harness Africa’s young labor force through joint ventures, especially in manufacturing, fintech, and logistics. With Taiwan as the 17th largest merchandise exporter and a leader in high-end manufacturing, he sees a future where Taiwanese-African partnerships can bolster local industries and expand market access across the continent.
