How the US Election Outcome Could Impact Nigeria

With the U.S. presidential election approaching, Nigerian analysts weigh the potential impacts of either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris administration on Nigeria. Kamala Harris, who secured the Democratic nomination after President Biden ended his re-election bid, could prioritize cooperation with Africa, extending the Biden administration’s focus on health, security, and economic partnerships. Conversely, Trump, who is running for a third time, may return to stricter immigration policies that previously affected Nigerians and other immigrants seeking entry to the U.S.

Experts argue that both candidates would likely support U.S. commercial interests in Nigeria, particularly in countering China and Russia’s influence in Africa. Policy analyst Tope Musowo noted the U.S. emphasis on increasing private-sector engagement and fostering economic ties in Nigeria, which could align with Harris’s potential focus on trade and investment opportunities. However, Trump’s transactional approach might lean toward selective support, with less emphasis on comprehensive bilateral initiatives.

While the election could impact immigration, trade, and security assistance for Nigeria, public policy experts caution against expecting major shifts. International relations professor Sylvester Odion Akhaine emphasizes that U.S. leaders prioritize national interests, suggesting that, regardless of the winner, Nigeria’s benefit may be limited unless it strategically positions itself to capitalize on potential partnerships.
