The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has voiced its sorrow and concern following the October 24 helicopter crash involving East Wind Aviation, which claimed the lives of eight Nigerian workers traveling to the FPSO NUIM ANTAN offshore facility near Calabar. Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, the NLC underscored the immense risks faced by workers in high-risk industries, emphasizing the dedication of those lost in this tragic incident
In a statement, the NLC highlighted the urgent need for stronger workplace safety measures, particularly for those employed in hazardous sectors like oil and gas. It called on the Nigerian government to reinforce health and safety standards to prevent similar tragedies, stressing that no worker should risk death or injury while performing their duties. The Congress criticized the existing gaps in safety regulations and enforcement, especially concerning travel and equipment safety standards.
The NLC also urged the federal government to initiate a thorough investigation to uncover the cause of the crash, hoping it will yield lessons to protect future workers. The Congress extended its condolences to affiliated unions, NUPENG and NAAPE, for the loss of valued members, and called for strengthened safety protocols in the aviation and oil and gas sectors to prevent further loss of life.
