Cooking gas price rose by 69% in August 2024

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has seen a significant increase in Nigeria over the past year.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the average cost for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas rose by 69.15%, from ₦9,194.41 in August 2023 to ₦15,552.56 in August 2024.

On a month-on-month basis, this represented a 9.05% increase from ₦14,261.57 in July 2024.For smaller cylinders, the price of refilling a 5kg cylinder also surged, rising by 56.25% year-on-year from ₦4,115.32 to ₦6,430.02.

Month-on-month, the price increased by 7.62%, from ₦5,974.55 in July 2024 to ₦6,430.02 in August 2024.

State-wise, Benue and Sokoto recorded the highest prices for refilling a 5kg cylinder at ₦7,000, followed by Rivers (₦6,954.55) and Borno (₦6,914.29).

Taraba had the lowest price at ₦5,600.67, with Abuja and Kogi following at ₦5,825.00 and ₦5,857.56, respectively.

For the 12.5kg cylinder, Rivers recorded the highest price at ₦17,086.36, while Bauchi had the lowest at ₦13,425.00.

The rising prices have raised concerns about household costs, with significant regional variations adding to the pressure on families across the country.
