Apple plans to use OLED displays for all iPhone models starting in 2025, according to Japan’s Nikkei. This shift from liquid crystal displays (LCDs) aims to provide more vivid colors and sharper contrast for high-definition visuals.
As a result, Japanese display makers Sharp and Japan Display will be excluded from Apple’s iPhone business, as they do not produce OLED screens.
Currently, Apple is sourcing OLED displays for the iPhone SE from China’s BOE Technology and South Korea’s LG Display.
Sharp and Japan Display, which previously held a significant share of iPhone display supply, have been relegated to providing LCDs for only the iPhone SE and do not manufacture OLED screens.
This move follows Apple’s previous adoption of OLED technology for premium iPhone models starting with the iPhone X in 2017 and extending to the latest iPad Pro models. Neither Sharp, Japan Display, nor LG Display commented on the report.
