Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has disconnected the University of Lagos (UNILAG) from the power supply because of unpaid electricity bills.
The university’s management revealed this in a statement, noting that the power cut happened on August 27 without prior notice, despite a recent payment of N180 million to EKEDC.
UNILAG has been struggling with rising electricity costs, which worsened after EKEDC upgraded the university’s tariff from “Band B” to “Band A.”
This change caused the monthly electricity bill to double from around N150 million to nearly N300 million. Despite ongoing negotiations and payments, the university received an unexpectedly high bill of N472 million for July.
The university management is working to resolve the issue with EKEDC and has asked the university community to remain calm. Meanwhile, power supply on the campus will be rationed until further notice.
