President Bola Tinubu will officially open the newly upgraded West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Rivers State, next week.

The terminal operator announced this on Sunday, noting that the upgrade, which cost $115 million, began in 2021.

The terminal, managed by APM Terminals, is the largest and most efficient container terminal in Nigeria outside of Lagos.

The Managing Director of WACT, Jeethu Jose, said the completion of this upgrade is a major achievement for Nigerian ports and will greatly impact the country’s trade.

WACT is Nigeria’s first greenfield container terminal developed under a public-private partnership.

It is located in the oil and gas free zone in Onne, making it a key entry point to Eastern Nigeria’s growing economy. In 2020, it became the first Nigerian port to receive the largest container vessel ever.
