The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued nine new off-grid generation licenses in the first quarter of 2024, totaling 109.69 megawatts, alongside three new trading licenses.
Among the recipients are Golden Penny Power Limited, which will build six off-grid gas plants in various states with a total capacity of 100MW, and MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, which received a permit for four captive generation plants in Lagos with a 15.94MW capacity.
NERC also issued several captive power generation permits to companies like SweetCo Foods Limited and African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited.
These permits allow the companies to generate power for their own use, not for sale to others.
Additionally, NERC granted permits and registration certificates to various mini-grid developers to promote renewable energy and serve specific geographical areas.
In addition to the generation permits, NERC certified six Meter Service Providers, including installers and manufacturers, and issued several regulatory orders to guide the operations of electricity distribution and transmission companies during the quarter.
