Banks and financial institutions in Nigeria will be closed on Thursday, August 1, 2024, due to a planned hunger strike protest.

Employees have been advised not to report to work as a safety measure, recalling previous protests where banks were targeted.

A banker mentioned the need to avoid a repeat of past incidents. Some financial firms, like Leadway Pensure and Meristem Securities Limited, have notified customers of their office closures, advising them to use digital channels for transactions.

The President of the National Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions Employees, Anthony Abakpa, stated that banks will monitor the protest closely.

He emphasized that closures require approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Employees are advised to exercise caution during the protest.
