Midoil Refining and Petrochemicals Company Limited has officially started construction activities in Lagos, with a sod-turning ceremony at Shekungba, Ikosi/Ejinrin Local Council Development Area.

Led by Executive Chairman Mrs. Elizabeth-Omolara Akintonde, the ceremony marked a significant milestone for the company, coinciding with Akintonde’s 74th birthday.

The refinery, with a capacity of 100,000 barrels per day, is expected to bring substantial development to the area, creating numerous direct and indirect jobs. Akintonde praised local leaders for their integrity in supporting the project and assured the community of rapid development.

Director Hajia Amina Abdullahi expressed joy at the project’s commencement after a decade of delays, highlighting faith in its successful completion. Retired Justice Olusola Hunponu-Wusu emphasized the need for more refineries in Nigeria to boost oil production and reduce fuel importation.

Bishop Ifedola Okupevi of the Lagos Anglican Communion blessed the project, praying for its timely completion.

The project, supported by agreements with local communities and a $5 billion investment from three consortiums, is set to significantly impact Nigeria’s energy landscape.
