Italian tax police have seized €121 million from Amazon Italia Transport, a logistics unit of e-commerce giant Amazon, amid allegations of tax fraud and illegal labor practices.
The Milan Prosecutors’ Office claims in a 94-page order that the unit bypassed labor and tax laws by using cooperatives and limited liability companies to supply workers while evading VAT tax duties and reducing social security payments.
Prosecutors argue that this scheme helped Amazon Italia Transport maintain competitive service prices in the Italian market. Amazon’s spokesperson in Italy has not commented on the case.
Similar investigations have targeted other major companies, including DHL, UPS, DB Schenker, and Esselunga, in recent years.
