The Nigerian government plans for the renewable energy sector to contribute 9,000 megawatts of power by 2030 as part of its vision to end energy poverty, announced the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, at a summit in Abuja.
The government is committed to providing affordable and reliable power to industries and institutions, addressing the long-standing issue of unreliable grid supply, which has hindered economic productivity and foreign investment.
Chief Adelabu highlighted ongoing efforts to promote renewable energy, including the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS) supported by the EU and Germany.
This initiative aims to deploy 23 mini-grids across 11 states, serving over 138,000 Nigerians. The push for renewable energy also focuses on connecting rural communities to modern electricity sources, ensuring broader access and improved quality of life.
Godfrey Ogbemudia of the European Union Delegation in Nigeria announced further support from the EU, with an additional EUR 100 million allocated between 2021 and 2027 to add 400 MW of renewable energy capacity.
This funding, part of a long-standing partnership with Nigeria, aims to benefit over five million Nigerians and significantly reduce CO2 emissions, reflecting the EU’s commitment to promoting renewable energy in Nigeria.
