Nigeria advances internet connectivity with $2bn fibre-optic project

In an initiative aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s connectivity infrastructure, Finance Minister Wale Edun addressed the Fibre Forward Strategic Development Workshop in Abuja. Organized by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Digital Economy, and Information Technology, the workshop highlighted Nigeria’s ambitious $2 billion fibre-optic project. This project aims to expand Nigeria’s fibre-optic backbone by 90,000 kilometers, positioning the country as Africa’s third-largest terrestrial fibre-optic network upon completion.

Minister Edun said the Federal Government is committed to the project’s success. He emphasized its potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and empower technological advancement across Nigeria. In his words “The Federal Government is dedicated to bridging the digital divide and fostering a digitally driven economy. This project is a testament to our commitment to advancing Nigeria’s technological infrastructure and enhancing connectivity for all Nigerians.”

The $2 billion Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) initiative represents a pivotal milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to revolutionize its digital landscape. By significantly expanding the nation’s fibre-optic network, the project aims to stimulate innovation, support business growth, and enhance access to digital services nationwide.
