Salpha Energy has been awarded a €25,000 grant for winning the 2024 Ashden Award for Energy Innovation, supported by the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The announcement was made during the London Climate Action Week, highlighting the achievements of Salpha Energy among seven other winners. The company was recognized for producing made-in-Africa solar home systems and providing households and businesses with access to affordable clean energy through loans and finance.
The CEO of Salpha Energy, Sandra Chukwudozie, expressed her excitement about being one of the two finalists in the Global South winners category, chosen from over 500 applicants. Chukwudozie emphasized that the award and accompanying grant will support the company’s efforts to scale up operations, gain publicity, and connect with funders and climate sector leaders. Ashden CEO, Ashok Sinha, praised the winners for addressing significant climate challenges and creating benefits like green jobs and fairer societies, urging investors and policymakers to support these innovators.
Salpha Energy has made significant strides in promoting sustainable energy solutions, having empowered over 1.5 million people with reliable solar energy, installed more than 6.7 gigawatt-hours of solar capacity, and reduced carbon emissions by over 4 million tonnes. With a production capacity of 300,000 systems per year, the company has created over 1,050 jobs and is pioneering gender inclusivity by attracting women to technical roles, providing training and mentorship, and promoting economic empowerment.
