On Tuesday, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) decided to step down the minimum wage memo to allow President Bola Tinubu to engage in further consultations before proposing a new national minimum wage.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, stated that the President will consult with the 36 state governors and members of the organized private sector to reach a figure acceptable to all parties, which will then be submitted to the National Assembly as an executive bill.

The President’s decision follows the Tripartite Committee meeting, where the government’s team and the organized private sector offered N62,000 as the new minimum wage, while the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) demanded N250,000. Joe Ajaero, NLC President, expressed expectations for the President to harmonize the figures with the Tripartite Committee members.

The Minister emphasized that the national minimum wage is a matter involving federal, state, and local governments, as well as the organized private sector and labor unions. The memo was stepped down to enable comprehensive consultations, ensuring the new minimum wage reflects informed and inclusive decisions.
