Apple’s App Store rules breach EU tech rules, EU regulators say

The EU has charged Apple with breaching tech rules by preventing app developers from steering consumers to alternative offers. This charge, based on the Digital Markets Act (DMA), could lead to significant fines for Apple.

The European Commission found that Apple’s new terms restrict app developers’ communication with users and criticized the fees Apple charges developers. Apple responded by claiming compliance with the DMA and that most developers would pay the same or less under the new terms.

The Commission is also investigating Apple’s new contractual requirements for third-party developers and app stores. Breaches of the DMA could result in fines up to 10% of Apple’s global annual turnover.
