The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, acknowledged that the problem of extortion by officials at Nigeria’s airports is beyond the ministry’s control. He assured the public that the ministry is working with other relevant ministers to find a lasting solution.
Keyamo’s response followed numerous complaints from travelers about extortion at international airports. He clarified that while the aviation ministry does not oversee most of the agencies involved, efforts are underway to address the issue in collaboration with the National Security Adviser.
To combat the problem, a task force has been established to eliminate touting, extortion, and other illicit activities at airports. The task force will enforce discipline and promote professionalism among airport staff, with strict penalties for those found guilty of accepting bribes.
