WestJet Airlines is working to return to normal operations following the rescindment of a strike notice by the union representing its maintenance engineers. Both parties have agreed to return to the bargaining table to negotiate improved working conditions and higher salaries for employees.

This development comes after WestJet announced the cancellation of 40 flights over June 18-19, affecting 6,500 customers. The dispute was presented before the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), which will require additional time and submissions from both parties to determine if arbitration is necessary.

WestJet President and Group Chief Operating Officer Diederik Pen stated that the company is committed to finding a resolution to avoid further disruptions. The union, represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), had initially planned to strike at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday but withdrew the notice to facilitate further negotiations.
