The Lagos State Government has set an ambitious target to significantly reduce carbon emissions in public transportation, aiming for 52% of buses in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to be fueled by clean energy by 2050. This initiative is part of the newly unveiled Lagos State Transport Policy, which seeks to minimize the environmental impact of the city’s transport system.
According to the policy, efforts are already underway to convert some BRT buses to gas fuel, with an intensified push expected as new buses are purchased by Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL) and private sector operators. The policy also includes plans to explore the electrification of BRT buses to further reduce carbon emissions and air pollution.
The transport policy outlines a detailed implementation timeline, starting with a review of the World Bank’s recommendations on cleaner fuel strategies within the next two years. The state will then establish a roadmap, approve necessary legislative frameworks, and begin procuring and operating cleaner vehicles for public transport. This plan is part of a broader Climate Action Plan to achieve a sustainable transport system in Lagos State by 2050.
