Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), has called on the judiciary to support efforts to combat crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the oil and gas industry.
Speaking at the National Judges Capacity Building Workshop on the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 in Abuja, Kyari emphasized that the benefits of the PIA are being undermined by these illegal activities. He suggested the establishment of a special court or accelerated hearings for cases related to crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism to enhance the industry’s potential as a driver of national economic and industrial growth.
Kyari highlighted the critical role of the judiciary in supporting the security measures implemented by the NNPC, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders. He stressed the importance of timely determination of charges and imposing adequate punishments to deter would-be offenders. Kyari noted that the survival of the country hinges on effectively addressing these crimes, suggesting that practice directions be issued to expedite the trials and enforce stringent sanctions.
Expressing the NNPC’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders for the successful implementation of the PIA, Kyari revealed the need to maximize the benefits of Nigeria’s natural resources for the country’s economic and social development. He also praised Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola and the workshop organizers for the opportunity to address the participants, reaffirming the judiciary’s significant role in achieving the industry’s full potential.
