On Monday, flights from Lagos airport terminals and other airports nationwide experienced significant delays and cancellations due to a strike by aviation workers. Entrances to Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 (MMA2) and the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) were blocked, forcing passengers to walk with their luggage to the terminals. Some airlines were unable to depart, leaving passengers stranded.
The strike is part of an indefinite action declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in response to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000. Aviation workers were instructed to stay away from work from midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024, as per directives from NLC and TUC.
Ado Sanusi, managing director of Aero Contractors, confirmed that while flights are operational, delays are occurring due to disruptions by aviation workers. Essential services by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) are still being provided. United Nigeria Airline also stated that none of its scheduled flights have been permitted to depart, affecting its services and operations. The airline apologized for the inconvenience and assured passengers they are monitoring the situation closely.
