The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced nearly $176 million in additional humanitarian aid for West African countries facing conflict, food insecurity, and displacement. This funding aims to address the critical needs in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin regions, where communities are struggling due to deteriorating security conditions.

The U.S. emphasizes the urgency of the situation, highlighting that the current humanitarian response is vastly underfunded. This additional aid will be delivered through UN and NGO partners to provide essential services like food assistance, healthcare, clean water, and protection for vulnerable populations. The U.S. also urges other donors to step up their support to alleviate suffering in the region.

This announcement builds on the U.S.’s commitment to Nigeria and the wider region. In 2018, they pledged over $533 million for humanitarian assistance, and they remain a leading donor in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin. This aid strengthens bilateral relations with Nigeria, aligning with their 4D policy of Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.
