Microsoft is giving cloud computing customers a new option for powering artificial intelligence (AI). They’re offering chips made by AMD, a rival to Nvidia, the current leader in this field.

Microsoft’s cloud service will offer AMD’s MI300X AI chips. This gives customers an alternative to Nvidia’s popular H100 GPUs, which are powerful but hard to find due to high demand.ompanies use them to build and run AI applications, which often require linking multiple chips together due to the large amount of data involved. AMD is confident their chips are strong enough to handle big AI tasks.

This move puts Microsoft in competition with Nvidia for a share of the AI market.

Additionally, Microsoft also offers its own AI chips called Maia. They’re showcasing a new type of processor called Cobalt 100, which is 40% faster than similar processors. These chips are being tested for use in Microsoft Teams and could compete with Amazon’s Graviton CPUs.
