The U.S. government is set to present its antitrust case against Alphabet’s Google in closing arguments on Thursday, concluding a trial that commenced on September 12. In this trial, Google, the leading online search provider, faces accusations of unlawfully maintaining its dominance by engaging in practices that favor its own interests.
Importance of making its search engine the default option on various devices to maintain user loyalty. However, Google has defended itself by arguing that its search engine’s popularity is due to its quality, and dissatisfied users can easily switch to alternatives.
Google’s lawyers have further contended that being the default option holds limited value and that users will not remain loyal if they are unhappy. The judge overseeing the non-jury trial will evaluate whether Google violated antitrust laws and consider appropriate remedies if necessary.
