The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of the Wise, chaired by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, has issued a warning to West African governments regarding the dangers of becoming proxy frontiers for foreign powers. The council emphasized that tolerating foreign interference could escalate conflicts in the region.
In a statement released on the ECOWAS X page, the council highlighted the growing geopolitical influence in West Africa and the risk of member states being used as pawns for the strategic interests of foreign powers. Urgent action was urged from the ECOWAS Commission and national leaders to prevent the region from becoming a battleground for external conflicts.
Furthermore, the council emphasized the importance of political leaders prioritizing the interests of their people and promoting participatory governance processes.
