Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen expressed happiness over the U.S. Congress passing a significant foreign aid package, which includes arms support for the island. This move comes amidst China’s repeated demands for the U.S. to cease arms sales to Taiwan, which Beijing considers its own territory despite Taiwan’s rejection of sovereignty claims.
The United States, Taiwan’s crucial ally and arms supplier despite no formal diplomatic ties, has garnered praise from President Tsai for the recent support. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Defense Minister, Chiu Kuo-cheng, highlighted the need for discussions with the U.S. regarding the utilization of the allocated funds for areas like training and equipment.
However, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office expressed anger towards the bills, emphasizing their opposition to any support for Taiwan independence. China urged the U.S. to fulfill its commitment against supporting Taiwan’s independence and to halt any form of arms support to the island.
