Moji Adeyeye, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has overcome numerous challenges throughout her life. With a background in pharmaceutics and manufacturing science, Adeyeye’s journey led her to become a professor at Roosevelt University in Illinois, where she honed the skills needed to lead NAFDAC.

In an exclusive interview with the BusinessDay team, Adeyeye outlined her vision and accomplishments at NAFDAC. Under her leadership, the agency prioritized governance, leadership, and the fight against substandard, falsified, and counterfeit medicines. Despite facing challenges such as staff working conditions and tramadol shortages, NAFDAC implemented a quality management system and focused on improving operational efficiency.

By emphasizing customer service and agency improvement, NAFDAC achieved ISO 9001 certification and prepared for the WHO global benchmarking tool. By March 2022, the agency met all indicators and recommendations, showcasing its dedication to enhancing regulatory standards and ensuring long-term sustainability. Adeyeye’s journey from student to NAFDAC Director exemplifies resilience and commitment to improving public health standards in Nigeria.
