AI to contribute $1.2 trillion to Africa’s economy by 2030

Microsoft has forecasted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will contribute approximately $1.2 trillion to Africa’s economy by the year 2030. This projection is part of a larger estimate of $15.7 trillion as the potential global contribution of AI to the economy by the same year.

The projection was made by Theo Watson, a Commercial Lawyer with Microsoft Africa, during his presentation titled “AI Opportunity in Africa” at the African Academy held virtually. Watson highlighted that the $1.2 trillion could boost Africa’s GDP by 5.6% by 2030.

While emphasizing the significant economic potential of AI, Watson also stressed the importance of responsible regulation to accelerate opportunities and ensure that the benefits of AI are realized across various sectors of the African economy. As AI continues to evolve, responsible ķiiì will play a crucial role in maximizing its positive impact while mitigating potential risks.
