Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced cryptocurrency prodigy, received a 25-year prison sentence on Thursday following his conviction in one of the largest financial fraud cases in history.
US prosecutors sought a longer prison term of 40-50 years after Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, was found guilty by a New York jury in November, following a five-week trial that delved into his dramatic downfall.
During the hearing, Bankman-Fried expressed remorse, acknowledging his wrongdoing and the consequences of his actions. He lamented the loss of what he described as “something beautiful” and admitted to squandering it all away.
The sentencing was delivered by US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who meticulously detailed the financial crimes committed by Bankman-Fried during the hearing.
