Residents of Omagwa and Ipo communities in Rivers State staged a protest at the entrance of the Port Harcourt International Airport, citing grievances over the lack of power supply and other basic amenities.
The demonstration, which began at 7 am on Wednesday, disrupted flight operations and caused a gridlock along Airport Road and neighboring areas. Protesters, including women carrying tree branches and placards, voiced their frustrations, highlighting the absence of compensation despite enduring noise pollution from the airport on a daily basis.
Peter Oki, one of the demonstrators, demanded compensation for the community’s longstanding lack of electricity and emphasized the need for federal support in providing essential services and infrastructure. The intervention of two traditional title holders facilitated the dispersal of the protesters, allowing movement to resume in the area.
