The Federal Government has urged West African nations to collaborate in protecting shared telecommunications infrastructure following a recent internet outage affecting the region.
Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, emphasized this call during the 21st West Africa Telecommunications Regulatory Assembly Annual General Meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The internet disruption on March 14th severely impacted West and Central Africa, causing failures in multiple subsea cables and disrupting online services, including banking operations. Maida stressed the necessity for a coordinated, multilateral approach to safeguarding shared infrastructure across member nations.
To address these challenges, Maida proposed the establishment of a framework for joint monitoring, risk mitigation, and emergency response procedures for submarine cables passing through the sub-region.
