China expressed its intent to strengthen communication with New Zealand and collaborate to uphold peace and stability in the region as the foreign ministers of both countries met on Monday.

This face-to-face meeting between Wang Yi and Winston Peters marks their first since New Zealand’s conservative government was elected in October 2023, having previously engaged in discussions via phone. Ahead of the meeting, Wang emphasized China’s commitment to enhancing strategic communication with New Zealand amid a complex international landscape. He stated the importance of joint efforts to maintain peace and stability regionally and globally.

In addition to meeting with Peters, Wang is scheduled to hold discussions with New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon. Following the engagements in New Zealand, Wang will travel to Australia to meet with Australian counterpart Penny Wong and engage in a roundtable discussion with business leaders in Canberra on Wednesday.
