The Nigerian House of Representatives has expressed concern over the inadequate minimum wage for workers in the country, asserting that a monthly salary below N100,000 is insufficient for any worker to live on.

Representative Aliyu Madaki of NNPP-Kano State highlighted the escalating inflation rates, making basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, education, healthcare, transportation, and clothing unattainable for the average Nigerian.

Madaki emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, particularly referencing Article 23, which guarantees fair and beneficial wages to employed individuals and their families, ensuring a dignified standard of living. Since the removal of fuel subsidies by the Federal Government, workers have grappled with the rising prices of goods and services, leading to increased inflation and a higher cost of living, thereby making their monthly incomes inadequate to cover basic needs.
