IMF Urges Nigerian Government to Address Widespread Hunger

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on the Nigerian government to take immediate action to combat widespread hunger while acknowledging the country’s challenging economic outlook.

Following its 2024 Article IV Mission to Nigeria, led by Axel Schimmelpfennig, the IMF emphasized the urgency of addressing food insecurity during its talks with Nigerian authorities held between February 12 and 23, 2024, in Lagos and Abuja.

The IMF team, which engaged with key stakeholders including Finance Minister Wale Edun, Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Olayemi Cardoso, and representatives from various sectors, highlighted the importance of implementing a well-targeted and effective social protection system to address food insecurity.
